Apple Files Patent for Concert Tickets +

A new detailed patent has been submitted by Apple according to the folks at Patently Apple.  The patent details a distribution method for paperless concert tickets via iTunes and presumably other Apple products like the iPhone and iPad.  This new system is currently named “Concert Tickets +.”  It is clear that Apple envisions itself as a major player in this ever-changing ticketing market.

Ticketmaster recently introduced Paperless Ticketing which allows a consumer to enter the venue by swiping there credit card that was used to purchase the tickets.  However, the system is not without its faults.  Critics of the paperless system argue that once a ticket is purchased it should be yours to do whatever you want with it.  Paperless tickets are non-transferable, so it is easy to see where issues could arise if you could not attend the show.

The patent goes far beyond just allowing you to use your iPhone or mobile device to enter a concert electronically.  There are also mentions of additional benefits that may include live recordings of the actual concert that you’re attending, exclusive interviews with the artist, or studio recordings by the artist.  Other benefits may include discounts on merchandise and refreshments, and digital maps directly to your seat.

The patent details kiosks that may be postioned at the venues entrance where fans can ‘check-in’.  Amazingly enough not everyone owns an iPhone, so there is an assumption that these Apple kiosks will allow the consumer to pick up their tickets by swiping a credit card or id.

For sporting events, Apple has plans to allow consumers to use their mobile device for parking passes and entry into the stadium.  While attending a baseball game a user may be able to pull up special drink coupons, or real-time statistics and rosters, directly on their mobile device.

Beyond ticketed events like concerts and sporting events, Apple appears to also be targeting newlyweds.  The patent allows for users to send wedding invitations and wedding information digitally.  A groom may want to send specifics to his groomsman on where to meet for a bachelor party, and then where to pick up his tuxedo the following day.  It is also noted that wedding programs could be sent directly to a mobile device.  I’m not so sure that I want everyone on their iPhone during my wedding, but I’m not Steve Jobs.

It remains to be seen if Apple will be in direct competition with Ticketmaster or not.  It is possible that they will partner directly with the artists to handle all of the ticketing needs.  However, Ticketmaster and LiveNation have recently merged and control most of the ticketing rights to many of the major venues around the country.

As a consumer I love having options, and as an iPhone owner I really love the idea of the Plus options of “Concert Tickets +.”  However, I hope that Apple does not go down the road that Ticketmaster has with Paperless Tickets Only events.  Paperless tickets take away my rights as a consumer.  I have no problem with that as an option when checking out.  I do have a problem with it being the ONLY option.
